Housing as a Human Right

July 9th, 2012, 7pm
Calvary-St. Andrew's Presbyterian Parish
68 Ashland St, Rochester, NY

Article 25 of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights establishes housing as a human right. However, the reality is that many are deprived of quality, affordable housing in our communities due to our unwillingness to question the role the market plays in housing distribution.

Instead of treating land & housing as a commodity, we can use the principles of cooperative economics to guarantee that all the people of Monroe County have access to quality, affordable housing, instead of relying failed market forcesl. Our Secretary, Drew Langdon, a member of Ant Hill Cooperative & Green Party candidate for New York State Assembly in the 137th District, will be guiding the conversation.

Calvary-St. Andrew's is a wheelchair accessible facility. ASL interpretation can be provided with 48 hours notice to Drew @ peaceandrainbows [at] riseup [dot] net.

Campaign Updates

Jill Stein for President

Dr. Jill Stein has won a clear majority of delegates in the Green Party's presidential campaign and will be nominated at the National Convention in Balitmore from July 12-15.  Stein is expected to be on the ballot in over 40 states this November.

Today, the campaign also announced that they had succeeded in the drive to qualify for federal matching funds, with 21 states giving at least $5000 each.  This is the first time that a Green Party candidate has qualified for this program and will give the campaign access to double the funds that they have raised up to this point.

WASHINGTON, DC -- The Green Party has compiled a list of the most
frequently asked questions from journalists about the Green
presidential candidates, 2012 Green National Convention, and the party
itself. Greens invite journalists to use this FAQ guide as a resource
for information throughout this election year and to contact us for
more information.

• Who are the candidates competing for the Green Party's presidential
nomination?

Roseanne Barr http://www.roseanneforpresident2012.org
Kent Mesplay http://mesplay.org
Jill Stein http://www.jillstein.org

Jill Stein is the frontrunner, having won 138 of the 184 delegates
assigned so far. Roseanne Barr, in second place, has been endorsed by
the Green Party Black Caucus and the Green Party of Philadelphia.

Greens have welcomed Kent Mesplay, now recognized by the Green Party
as a presidential candidate, to the race.

Results of state Green Party primaries, conventions, and caucuses
http://www.gp.org/committees/pcsc/2012/documents/Delegate-Tracking-2012.pdf

• How will the Green nominee be chosen?

State Green Parties have been participating in primary elections and
hold statewide conventions and caucuses to apportion delegates for the
nomination, which will take place on Saturday, July 14 at the Green
Party's 2012 National Convention in Baltimore, Md.
(http://www.gpconvention2012.com). The convention runs from July 12 to
July 15 will be held on the campus of the University of Baltimore.

During the one or more rounds of voting by delegates, the first
presidential candidate to gain more than half of the votes will win
the nomination.

The 50 states, District of Columbia, and US territories have widely
varying rules for party status and ballot access, so the various state
Green Parties have their own rules for choosing delegates. The Green
Party is tracking the results of the state primaries, conventions, and
caucuses (http://www.gp.org/committees/pcsc/2012/documents/Delegate-Tracking-2012.pdf).

• Can the media attend the Green Party's 2012 National Convention?
What will be the highlights?

The Green Party invites and encourages journalists from all media to
cover the convention. Bloggers are invited too. We urge journalists to
let us know they will attend and cover the convention by registering
on our Media Credentialing page
(http://www.gpconvention2012.com/p/media.html), so that we can prepare
for their participation and better accommodate them. Journalists can
also register on site.

The Green Party will hold an introductory press conference on
Thursday, July 12, at 4 p.m. More press conferences will take place on
Friday and will feature Green candidates for state and local office
and current Green officeholders.

On Saturday (nomination day), a press conference at 9 a.m. will
introduce the presidential candidates. There will be a reserved media
section for journalists in the auditorium where the nomination takes
place. After the nomination, the Green Party will hold a press
conference for the presidential and vice presidential nominees,
probably beginning between 4 and 5 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

The University of Baltimore venues for the press conferences and the
nomination will be announced as the convention approaches, as will the
names of Green state and local candidates and officeholders
participating in press conferences and other convention details. We
invite journalists at the convention to meet Green Party members,
explore other events on the schedule, and get to know us.

• How many ballot lines will the Green Party have on Election Day?

The Green Party of the United States is aiming for at least 46 state
ballot lines. The party is currently on the ballot in 20 states. More
information: http://www.gp.org/2012/ballot-access.html

• Why does the Green Party run presidential candidates, when it's so
unlikely they will win on Election Day?

The most important reason is that Americans deserve a real choice on
Election Day. Voters deserve the right to vote for whichever
candidates best represent their interests, ideals, and values --
without being told that their choice is restricted to two candidates.
The Democratic and Republican parties together represent a narrow
range of ideas and policies. Both established parties and their
candidates accept millions of dollars in contributions from powerful
corporate lobbies. The Green Party and Green candidates accept no
corporate money.

The Green presidential ticket leads the party's slate of candidates
for all offices. The nominees express the party's platform,
principles, and positions and generate national attention for the
Green Party. They also help raise publicity and contributions for
state and local candidates during their campaign tours.

Some states use numbers of votes cast for a presidential candidate
among their qualifications for party recognition.

• What challenges do Green candidates face in their campaigns?

The greatest challenges are the grossly unfair and antidemocratic
election rules in many states. Democratic and Republican politicians
in such states have together enacted ballot access rules that
privilege themselves and obstruct independent and alternative party
candidates.

Pennsylvania in recent years has required Democratic and Republican
candidates in statewide elections (for Governor, US Senator,
President) to hand in ballot petitions with at least 2,000 valid
signatures, while requiring a minimum number "equal to 2 per cent of
the total vote of the highest vote cast in the state in the previous
election" (ranging between 20,000 and 67,000 in recent elections) from
alternative party and independent candidates, along with the threat of
excessive, financially ruinous fees for trying to qualify for the
ballot.

In Alabama, a party on the ballot by petition or by a previous
statewide vote can retain ballot access through the next election by
polling 20% for president. In Oklahoma and Virginia, the same process
requires 10%. (See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballot_access#State_ballot_access_laws)
Greens, often in coalition with other parties, have worked to overturn
unfair rules by petitioning state legislatures and filing lawsuits.
There are current or pending lawsuits with the Green Party as a
plaintiff in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon,
Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

Greens in Georgia, where 2008 Green presidential nominee Cynthia
McKinney has announced her run for the US House, have filed a lawsuit
along with the Constitution Party against their state's ballot access
laws, which have been called the most obstructive in the US
(http://www.ballot-access.org/2012/05/25/georgia-ballot-access-lawsuit-filed/).

Green presidential candidates are routinely excluded from debates
sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD), which is
owned and operated by the Democratic and Republican parties. The CPD
took over the debates from the League of Women Voters in 1988 for the
purpose of barring other parties' candidates, as internal memos from
the CPD have shown.

Finally, Green candidates must sometimes deal with the mistaken belief
among some voters that only Democrats and Republicans are the only
"legitimate" candidates or that a two-party limit is enshrined in the
US Constitution.

• Are Greens concerned that a Green presidential candidate might
affect the election outcome in 2012, after accusations that Ralph
Nader gave us eight years of George W. Bush in 2000?

Al Gore very likely won Florida and therefore won the 2000 election.
("[A consortium of news organizations], looking at a broader group of
rejected ballots than those covered in the court decisions, 175,010 in
all, found that Mr. Gore might have won if the courts had ordered a
full statewide recount of all the rejected ballots." New York Times,
November 12, 2001,
http://www.nytimes.com/2001/11/12/politics/12VOTE.html)

The 2000 accusation is based on the idea that obstruction of voters,
manipulation of vote counts, and a possible election theft by a major
party (the GOP) are less dangerous to our democracy than the right of
an alternative party to participate fair and square. The accusation
suggests that some parties are entitled to votes and others are not.

Greens are less concerned about the Obama-Romney contest than with the
fact that neither has an adequate jobs program, climate-change action
program, or plan to halt home foreclosures; both have embraced
military attacks without provocation on other countries; both join
their parties in favor of the $600 billion "fiscal cliff" for the
post-election lame duck Congress; both favor profits for the health
insurance industry over the right of all Americans to quality health
care (Medicare For All); both support indefinite detention without due
process and other violations of constitutional and international law.
Neither corporate-sponsored party protects our rights or addresses the
crises we face.

Greens encourage Americans who want fair and open elections to help us
replace at-large and winner-take-all voting with important democratic
reforms like Instant Runoff Voting (also called Ranked-Choice Voting)
and Proportional Representation. Ireland has used IRV since 1937.
Runoffs were held in this year's elections in France and Egypt.

• What is the Green Party's relation to the Occupy Movement?

The Occupy Movement is nonpartisan and does not support any party or
candidate. Greens respect this principle and encourage Occupiers to do
what they do best -- build a popular movement against policies that
have enriched and empowered Wall Street (the "one percent") while
hurting working Americans.

All three Green presidential candidates, as well as many other Greens,
have participated in Occupy protests and on some occasions were asked
to speak at Occupy rallies. The Green Party's platform and positions
are consistent with the Occupy Movement's grievances about the growth
of corporate power and US government's descent into oligarchy,
military aggression, and ecological irresponsibility. We encourage all
voters who share these concerns to register and vote Green.

Georgia Greens Welcome McKinney's Entry to Race
Green Party to meet in Nominating Convention June 2nd

Following weeks of rumors and media reports about her intentions, Stone Mountain, Georgia resident Cynthia McKinney, a six term member of the U.S. Congress and the 2008 Green Party nominee for President of the United States has filed an FEC-2 "Statement of Candidacy."  In this filing she declares her intention to seek the nomination of the Georgia Green Party for Congress of the United States.

"Greens welcome Ms. McKinney's entry into the race," said Adam Shapiro, chair of the Georgia Green Party.  "We hope we can work together to restore to the Fourth Congressional District leadership committed to expeditiously ending this nation's illegal and immoral wars."

The Georgia Green Party will convene its Nominating Convention on Saturday June 2nd, 2012, from 10am till 4pm at the Tucker-Reid H. Cofer Public Library; 5234 LaVista Road; Tucker, GA 30084.  This Convention is expected to consider endorsing former state party cochair Denice Traina in her bid for election to the nonpartisan Augusta-Richmond County commission.  In addition, the Party anticipates considering the nominations of both Ms. McKinney in her bid for Georgia's Fourth Congressional District and Kwabena Nkromo who has announced his intention to seek the Party's nomination for the State Assembly in District #57.

In addition to securing the support of Delegates to the June 2nd Convention, in order to appear as Greens on the Georgia ballot, these partisan candidates are also required to file petitions with signatures representing 5% of the number of voters who are registered and eligible to vote in November's General Election.  This ballot access standard is ten times the national average and according to Richard Winger, editor of Ballot Access News, constitutes the highest barrier to participation in the world, when comparing all countries which conduct contested elections.  The filing deadline is in 76 days.

"We will not succeed in placing Green candidates on the Georgia ballot without the participation of citizens willing to carry our ballot access petitions," said Al Herman, Secretary-Treasurer of the Georgia Party.  "We face an near-impossible barrier and a short timeline. We're inviting Greens and others from around the nation to come to Georgia to help us surmount these barriers.  We're asking Greens in Georgia to open their homes to host our out-of-state volunteers."

The Georgia Green Party has organized since before its first filing with the Secretary of State in 1996.  The Party organizes to inject Green values of peace and non-violence, social justice, grassroots democracy and ecological wisdom into the public policy making process.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Green Party candidates and leaders said today that
bipartisan politicians supporting President Obama's Simpson-Bowles
Commission are targeting working Americans' job security, wages,
benefits, Social Security, Medicare, education, student loans, and
other necessities.

The Simpson-Bowles Commission (National Commission on Fiscal
Responsibility and Reform, nicknamed 'Catfood Commission' because of
its recommendations for scaling back Social Security) was established
by President Obama to plan his administration's economic policies.

A bipartisan summit to promote the Simpson-Bowles recommendations was
held in Washington, DC last week, sponsored by the Peter G. Peterson
Foundation, named for the co-founder of the private-equity firm
Blackstone Group LP
(http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2012/05/16/bloomberg_articlesM42GOS07SXKX01-M44OI.DTL).
Participating in the summit, which has received little media coverage,
were former President Bill Clinton (D), Treasury Secretary Tim
Geithner, House Budget Committee Chair Paul Ryan (R), and House
Speaker John Boehner (R).

"President Obama's 'Catfood Commission' wants to impose the kind of
austerity on middle-income and low-income families in the US that
citizens in Iceland and Greece angrily rejected," said Colin Beavan,
PhD, Green Party candidate for the US House in Central Brooklyn, New
York's 8th Congressional District (http://www.votecolin.org). "The
focus of the commission is on solving the deficit by cutting services
and job protections, rather than on creating jobs, which would
stimulate the US economy and assist millions of Americans facing
hardship. They also intend to reform the tax code, which means tax
cuts for top corporations and the one percent, starving the economy
even more."

The Green Party has urged Congress to reject the commission's
recommenations and has promoted alternative plans to boost the economy
and create millions of new jobs, with Green candidates endorsing the
'Green New Deal', first introduced in 2010
(http://www.greenpartywatch.org/2010/08/11/62-green-candidates-endorse-green-new-deal/).

Greens, including presidential candidates Roseanne Barr, Kent Mesplay,
and Jill Stein, have participated in the Occupy Movement's protests
against Wall Street power, privilege, and virtual impunity for
criminal fraud. Greens said that the Obama Administration's alarming
enlistment of the Homeland Security Department and military apparatus
in civil police suppression of Occupy protests
(http://www.nationofchange.org/white-house-dems-back-banks-over-protests-newly-discovered-homeland-security-files-show-feds-central)
hints that the federal government anticipates more widespread unrest
in reaction to austerity measures, if enacted.

"The participation of Bill Clinton in the summit signals that the
Obama Administration has adopted much of the GOP economic agenda. The
Clinton White House discarded the Democrats' traditional platform and
signed on to NAFTA, Welfare Reform, and concentrated media ownership
in the 1996 Telecommunications Act. When Clinton signed the Commodity
Futures Modernization Act and repeal of Glass-Steagall in 1999, he
helped enable the Wall Street abuses that caused the severe 2008
recession," said Barry Hermanson, Green candidate for Congress in San
Francisco (http://www.barryhermanson.org).

"Obama is following in the footsteps of his Democratic predecessor.
Social Security and Medicare are on the chopping block -- because of
President Obama, a Democrat," said Mr. Hermanson.

Greens said that too many Americans are giving President Obama and
other Democrats a pass during the 2012 election year for their
capitulations and abandonment of working Americans. Anger continues
against Republican Governor Scott Walker's attacks on public sector
jobs, benefits, and organizing rights in Wisconsin, while Democratic
Governor Andrew Cuomo's similar attacks on New York's public employees
have been mostly ignored
(http://www.howiehawkins.com/2010/media-releases/476-green-party-says-cuomo-fiscal-plan-recycles-failed-policies.html).

Jill Stein won the majority of votes and delegates at the Green Party of New York State's convention on Saturday in Troy, NY. With 88% of the vote, Stein will receive 14 of NY State's 16 delegates at the Green Party of the United States' presidential convention this July in Baltimore.Roseanne Barr received 12% of the vote and will be awarded 2 delegates at the national convention. The votes were taken as part of a statewide caucus in which all Greens were invited to register their preference for presidential candidates, and the potential nominees Jill Stein, Roseanne Barr, and Kent Mesplay addressed the crowd via Skype.

"New York is proud to send delegates to the national Green Party convention to represent New York's Green voters. We believe that the nominees our delegates will be representing: Jill Stein (www.jillstein.org) and Roseanne Barr (http://roseanneforpresident2012.org/ ) symbolize the best of what the party stands for: grassroots democracy, social and economic justice, and ecological wisdom. Unlike Obama and Romney, the Green Party is committed to running a presidential candidate not beholden to corporate interests, and no Green campaign will take corporate donations, while Obama and Romney have no qualms about selling themselves to the highest donor. Where the Demo-Publicans offer austerity and cutbacks, the Greens argue for full employment, taxing the wealthy and corporations, and tackling the climate crisis. Our candidates will bring this message to the people of the United States," said co-chair Dr. Peter A. LaVenia.

The convention was also addressed by a number of Green candidates (http://www.web.gpnys.com/?page_id=251) for US Senate, Congress, and the State Legislature, including Colia Clark, Evergreen Chou, Anthony Gronowicz, Ursula Rozum, and Tom Siracuse and distinguished CUNY professor and former Green gubernatorial candidate Stanley Aronowitz.

Presidential Candidate Forum

Saturday evening, Rose Aguilar of KALW moderated a forum of the two leading candidates for the Green Party's presidential nomination in San Francisco.  Roseanne Barr & Jill Stein each presented themselves in a respectful manner uncommon in today's political atmosphere, promoting a variety of political solutions rooted in the Green Party's Ten Key Values.  The nearly 2 hour forum can be viewed online at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WGLi5_i0xQ.

New York Presidential Convention

Then, after watching the forum and deciding who you think will best represent the Party in this year's presidential election, make sure to fill out your presidential preference ballot.  The Green Party of New York State did not have its own primary this year, but will instead be hosting a nominating convention in Troy this Saturday, May 19th.  All enrolled Greens are eligible to attend and vote, with an option to send in your ballot if you are unable to attend.  For further details, see the state Party's website: http://www.web.gpnys.com/?p=11762.  If you're interested in going to Troy, please send a message to peaceandrainbows@riseup.net.

Green Party candidates and activists prepare for the 'Occupy May Day'
General Strike

• 2012 Green Presidential Nominating Convention, July 12-15 in
Baltimore, Md. http://www.gpconvention2012.com
Media Credentialing page http://www.gpconvention2012.com/p/media.html

WASHINGTON, DC -- Green Party members will participate in the May 1
General Strike organized by the Occupy Movement and the May 1
Coalition and will join thousands of union members, students,
immigrants, and others across the US in the first national strike in
the nation's history, with simultaneous strikes in other countries.

Rallies, marches, and picket lines are planned for over 115 cities to
assert the rights of working people and democracy, in the face of
growing power of financial elites over government and the lives of the
"99 percent" and the threat this represents to the future of the US.

"The Occupy Movement is nonpartisan and is not affiliated with any
political party, including the Green Party. But the presence of Greens
in Occupy protests, including the May Day strike, is a reminder that
the demands of the Occupy Movement will be represented on the ballot
on Election Day. They won't be represented by the Wall Street
candidates -- Republicans and Democrats -- but by Green candidates,
who accept no money from corporate PACs," said Ursula Rozum, peace
activist and organizer in Syracuse, NY, and Green Party candidate for
Congress in New York's 24th Congressional district
(http://www.ursulaforcongress.com).

Green candidates running for office at every level, from city council
to Congress and the White House, are basing their campaigns on the
Green New Deal (http://www.greenpartywatch.org/2010/08/11/62-green-candidates-endorse-green-new-deal)
and calling for the following:

• Abolition of student loan debt: The Green Party endorsed 1TDay, the
national day of action to break the link between higher education and
Wall Street, marking the day on which the total amount of student loan
debt in the US surpassed trillion dollars (http://1tday.org /
http://www.occupystudentdebtcampaign.org).

• An immediate halt to home foreclosures

• Democratic workplaces, democratic unions, and strengthened rights
for working Americans, including job security, benefits, and liveable
wages; repeal of Taft-Hartley restrictions on workplace organizing

• Immigrants' rights: legalization for undocumented immigrants and an
end to raids and deportations

• Money for jobs, education, and the social safety net, instead of
wars and military contracts

• An end to the War on Drugs, criminalization of youth and people of
color, and the for-profit prison system

• Creation of millions of new jobs in conservation, conversion from
fossil fuels to clean energy, retrofitting of homes and buildings for
energy efficiency, and other public works projects to stem the advance
of climate change

• Medicare For All (single-payer national health care) and
preservation of Social Security, without privatization or postponed
eligibility age

• Justice for the victims of Wall Street: full investigation and
prosecution of financial institutions whose fraud and recklessness
triggered the 2008 economic meltdown; restoration of Glass-Steagall
and other regulatory protections; break-up of "too big to fail" banks
